See moreSpain is experiencing an intensification of extreme weather events. Examples include the DANA that left a deep impact on the Valencian Community in October 2024, the series of adverse events that particularly affected Andalusia and Extremadura in February 2026, and the wave of wildfires in July 2026 that affected a large part of the Iberian Peninsula, with a particularly severe impact on Castile and León and the Community of Madrid.
The Government of Spain is working to respond to the increasingly severe impacts of climate change and to protect citizens, workers, the economy, and biodiversity.
In order to restore normality in the affected areas, the following regulations were adopted:
- Royal Decree-Law 7/2024, of 11 November, adopting urgent measures to promote the Immediate Response, Reconstruction and Recovery Plan in response to the damage caused by the Isolated High-Level Depression (DANA) in various municipalities between 28 October and 4 November 2024.
- Royal Decree-Law 5/2026, of 17 February, adopting urgent measures in response to damage caused by various adverse weather events, with particular impact in the autonomous communities of Andalusia and Extremadura.
- Royal Decree-Law 20/2026, of 29 July, establishing urgent labour and social protection measures in response to wildfires.
